Omer khan ub11/11/2023 ![]() “I really didn’t have a chance to appreciate it until I left. Still, he gave me this gem, which is interesting because he lived in Hawaii and now will call Pittsburgh home: He didn’t give me more than one sentence per question. I was the only person who talked to Herbig, and he wasn’t very interested in talking. Quick story: I was tasked at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine by the Pro Football Writers Association to talk to Herbig and provide a transcript. The Steelers need to re-sign Terrell Edmunds. Many of those who couldn’t talk better about the signing of Myles Jack a year ago now think he should be cut even after having a 100-tackle season. That doesn’t mean they won’t be successful here, but you have to keep perspective. Remember, the three outside free agents they’ve added (Peterson, Holcomb and Herbig) were - for whatever reason - not wanted by their former teams. The Steelers don’t like to play a lot of zone, so that’s something to keep an eye on. He was a great press corner when he was younger but played much better in Minnesota as an off, zone corner. The question that will hover around this move is where Peterson will play. He’s not part of the long-term plan, and that concerns fans.īut a team-friendly deal for a star player who can be a mentor is a no-brainer for me. Peterson might be as good as Sutton in 2023, but the age leaps off the page at you. That’s why many view the loss of Sutton to the Lions as a bad move. He is still young and could be a building block for the team. Sutton was a homegrown player whom the Steelers developed into a top cornerback. Both can’t be true, right? It is more complicated than that. You either have to like one or the other. We all try to compare the dynamic between signing Peterson and not re-signing Cameron Sutton.Steelers keep Larry Ogunjobi, addressing a key need and impacting their draft strategy Other free-agency notes ![]() After a couple of days of free agency, the Steelers don’t need a guard, defensive lineman, cornerback, inside linebacker or safety. You know, drafting for want and not need. ![]() Khan is filling holes in free agency to allow the team to act freely in the draft. While we might be looking for wholesale changes in the way the Steelers do things, Khan spent 20 years watching Colbert and how he went about the business, so surely some of that rubbed off on Khan, and we are seeing instances of where. Much space can be generated by restructures/deletions by 4 p.m. Quick math - not my strength - tells me Steelers are about $10-$12 million over the cap depending on salaries of Kazee and Holcomb. Larry Ogunjobi and Damontae Kazee were more of the norm for the Steelers in bringing back players they like. Nate Herbig and Cole Holcomb fall into that category. ![]() Other than Peterson, that’s how it has gone for Khan in his first go-around in free agency. The Steelers have been attracted to players with a little meat left on the bone, usually second-contract guys. How Patrick Peterson fits the Steelers, filling a big hole and serving as a mentor ![]()
